Nonna Said…Move over Paesano! There’s a new pizza place opening in the Merchant City!

West End pizza smash hit Nonna Said is set to get a slice of the action in Glasgow’s Merchant City, following stellar success both online and via delivery apps during lockdown 3.0

The takeaway which quickly achieved cult status across the city serving Napoli-style pizza with delicious and outlandish flavour combinations alongside epic Italian street food inspired sides, announced today they will open a flagship restaurant in Candleriggs on Monday 3rd May, following the easing of restrictions.

Nonna Said will bring in your face flavour to the heart of the Candleriggs student quarter.  With a 1am license and capacity of 130, it not only promises to be the hottest new casual dining in Glasgow, but the place to hang out when late-night restrictions lift with hip hop vibes and an exciting drinks menu. On draught, amongst others there will be Old Mout pineapple and raspberry cider, Beavertown’s Neck Oil and Gamma Ray and Weihenstephaner.  Additionally, there are expertly crafted classic cocktails with a twist and an Italian gin perfect serve range.

When it comes to food, it’s pizza, but not as you know it. Best sellers include the seriously tasty Salt and Chilli chicken pizza with fried chicken, salt and chilli spices, spring onion and curry mayo, the hugely popular Spice Boi with jalapeno poppers, mac and cheese and buffalo sauce. The Fire Roasted Pepper and Black Garlic is not just for veggies and pizza puritans will enjoy Calm Doon, Here’s the Margarita. For full on flavour the Lamb Shawarma with homemade lamb doner, shawarma spices and garlic sauce deliver, and the Scottish BBQ with Buckfast BBQ sauce, square sausage, bacon and spicy mince is set to be a hit.

Unlike Papa John with his soggy wedges, Nonna has serious side game with things like loaded mac and cheese with spicy haggis or hash browns with pepperoni and cheese topping. There are also classic Italian desserts, just like Nonna used to make!

Nonna Said’s Development Chef, John Molloy said “The menu is constantly evolving, there’s a vegan pepperoni incoming. I’m currently working on a donut recipe too, they’re like traditional Zeppole in shape and are flavoured with orange zest, cinnamon and ricotta which brings the Italian side into it. The texture and some of the taste will put you in mind of the Barras ones of old, if you’ve ever tried those.”

General Manager, Douglas Coupland said “We are super excited to get started and create the kind of edgy, in your face, no rules brand that Glasgow has longed for.  We’ll keep Nonna Said super fresh in terms of innovation and style in the months and years to come.  Keep your eyes peeled for our weekly ‘special pizza’ which will pay homage to key dates in the retail calendar and push the boundaries of pizza making like never before.”
